Move to Mandatory Code
EphMRA – Code of Conduct Proposed move to Mandatory Code
The new EphMRA Code of Conduct was introduced in January 2010 as
a voluntary Code for members. It was decided not to recommend
making the Code mandatory for a period of time to allow for the
Code to become embedded and referenced and for members to become
used to using the Code as an international standard. The time has
come now to assess how members feel about the Code becoming a
mandatory part of membership. The Executive Board recommends this
move.
EphMRA has consulted with members to assess views on this
recommendation so that an informed decision can be taken by the
EphMRA Board on the way forward.
Why have a mandatory Code? The Board believes that this:
Sets a clear and firm internal standard
Sends an unambiguous message that EphMRA is serious and
professional about standards and compliance
Raises ethical standards
Supports the view that strong self-regulation is better than
externally imposed regulation
Supports the clear demarcation and differentiation of MR
(particularly from non-interventional research)
EphMRA already has appropriate training in place to support
understanding and implementation of the Code of Conduct and this is
available free to all members companies. A procedure for members to
report breaches of a mandatory Code of Conduct would also be
implemented and supported by EphMRA at the appropriate time.
